Elworth have opened a gap at the top of the North Staffs and South Cheshire League Divison One, following an impressive victory over Newcastle and Hartshill.

Elworth took 25 points from the encounter, ending 183/8 with Newcastle all out for 95.

The win comes on the back of a 95-run victory over Silverdale.

Foxes skipper Russ Ballard won the toss and elected to bat, showing confidence that the Elworth attack, spearheaded by Yasir Ali, Mike Holt and spinner Chris Winter, is well equipped to defend anything in excess of 180.

It’s been a busy start to the summer for the Sandbach Striders.

Last week saw members take to the Welsh hills in four different events, with more than 15,000 feet of ascent between them.

There were also three park runs, a five-miler in fancy dress and one of the busiest 10k events in the country.

• Entry is now open for the Sandbach 10k and Family Fun Run on Sepember 11 this year, sponsored by Butcher & Barlow.

In the last month Elworth have bounced back from two disappointing set backs and put together a decent run of five wins, three in the league and one each in the Cheshire Cup and Talbot Cup.

There is talk of swallows and summers to be heard, which calms the more fevered reactions to such a run of form, but the Foxes are undoubtedly on the move.

This latest success at the home of one the sides relegated from the Premier Division last year sees Elworth move up to fourth in the Championship Dvision One table, just five points behind second placed Burslem.

Sandbach RUFC pipped in tight away clash

Bromsgrove v Bach (30)

Bromsgrove 24 v 19 Sandbach

Report by Stuart Battersby

Sandbach travelled to Bromsgrove for the first time in their history for basically what was a mid-table dead-rubber game.

That’s not to say that bragging rights weren’t at stake, not to mention revenge for Sandbach who lost the first meeting by a single point following the craziest refereeing we’ve seen for some years.

Like all Midlands teams at this level Bromsgrove were bigger and heavier than their Sandbach counterparts, although as long as the technique is good that shouldn’t matter too much.

Sandbach youngsters top the league

It has been a season to remember for Sandbach United FC’s under-11 Kites this year.

Having made the decision after last season to skip their own true age group (under 10),  team manager Darren Williams, one of Sandbach United’s most qualified coaches, challenged the squad by playing in the age group above them,  where they have excelled beyond expectation.

Not only did they secure promotion last week, but have now surpassed that further by ensuring they finished the job as league champions after another victory on Saturday.
