Sandbach woman’s African mountain challenge

An inspirational Sandbach woman has taken on Africa’s highest mountain in the name of charity.

Mum of three Andrea Sheardown, 45, this month went on an expedition to climb Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, along with her son Sam, 14, to raise money for the UK’s only cholangiocarcinoma charity AMMF.

It is the latest in a catalogue of amazing challenges that Andrea has taken on to raise awareness about the deadly cancer.

She explained: “In October 2015, my world was turned upside down when I was diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma a very rare form of bile duct cancer.

“It is known as one of the ‘silent killer’ cancers, and has one of the worst survival rates of all cancers, as it is difficult to diagnose accurately and early.

“After initially been given just weeks to live, I managed to defy the odds and go on to have major surgery to my liver in November 2015 to remove the cancer, and this was then followed by a gruelling six-month course of chemotherapy.

“This cancer is increasing across all age groups, including younger people, and the cause of this ongoing increase is unknown.

Much more research is desperately needed. “I feel like I have been climbing a mountain over the past few months so it seemed apt to try the real thing, even though I don’t like heights!”

Following almost 11 months’ training to prepare for her epic climb and having already successfully scaled the summits of Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis, Andrea flew to Tanzania on February 16 to spend six days climbing.

Andrea added: “I knew I wanted to do something that would really challenge me both physically and mentally.

“Since November 2016 I have raised over £20,000 and the amount keeps rising, which is wonderful.

“However, having my son and so many loyal and supportive friends join me for the climb will really spur me on.”
